Microtonal Software![]()
Create beautiful snowflake like fractal music. Vary the parameters and hear the tunes transformed! Send your tunes as musical e-cards to your friends. Play in historical or exotic tunings using a music keyboard or your PC keyboard.
Justonic Pitch Palette (Windows or Mac)
Pitch Palette gives real time tuning adjustment features to many microtonal capable synthesizers, with emphasis on harmonic accuracy and real time modulations. It can create and download pitch tables for your synthesizer, has scale editing tools and many other functions.
Scale Analysis and Editing tool for the Macintosh. It can be used for simple editing and downloads of scales to synthesizers, real time retuning, theoretical examinations, creation, modification, calculations and more. It comes with a large scale archive. Li'l Miss' Scale Oven supports tuning table downloads to most of the synthesizers and samplers listed on the Microtonal Synthesis web site. Though I have not personally used it, this is the closest equivalent to SCALA that you will find on the Macintosh platform.
Macintosh microtonal editor fully compatible with Max/MSP, MTS and Scala. Allows you to create and edit alternate tunings in a native format based on pure frequencies.
MicroTone for ArtWonk, MusicWonk, SoftStep and BankStep (Windows)
The MicroTone program provides an interface to SCALA format .scl files for use by any of the Algorithmic Arts programs. Pitch Bends are added to monophonic MIDI channels to make any synthesizer microtonal capable. ArtWonk, MusicWonk and Softstep are oriented towards algorithmic composition with graphical interfaces, while BankStep is a virtual realization of a (massive) analog modular sequencer.
SCALA (Windows, OS X, MS-DOS, Linux, Unix)
Scala is the de facto standard for microtonal scale editing software. It can be used for simple editing and downloads of scales to synthesizers, or for theoretical examinations, creation, modification, calculations and visualizations of new scales. A scale archive of over 3000 microtonal scales can be downloaded from the same site and used within Scala. Scala supports tuning table downloads to most of the synthesizers and samplers listed on the Microtonal Synthesis web site and is highly recommended.
